Would you stay at the Lost Liberty Hotel?
Ahh..back to eminent domain.
Not suprisingly the Supreme Court came down along ideological lines in the recent New London, CT eminent domain case.....what was suprising was which side supported big business. It was the "liberal" wing made up of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, David Souter, John Paul Stevens, Anthony Kennedy, and Stephen G. Breyer.
One of my favorite justices, Sandra Day O'Connor, wrote this in the dissenting opinion, "Any property may now be taken for the benefit of another private party, but the fallout from this decision will not be random. The beneficiaries are likely to be those citizens with disproportionate influence and power in the political " In agreement with her was Antonin Scalia. Hell must have truly frozen over for that man to make an anti-business decision.
In response to this decision, a group called Freestar Media has filed an eminent domain claim against Justice Souter's farmhouse in New Hampshire. They want to build a hotel and increase the revenue generated by that property. I love it :)
