CFF: Map for Saturday

This was a documentary done by Brook Silva-Braga about his year of travelling. He went beyond the backpack in Europe stuff and spent a considerable amount of time in Asia.

Brook saved up money, left his cushy job, and went out to see the world. Doesn't sound like anything particually unusual when written out like that...but the documentary was incredibly insightful about life on the road and the type of person who is willing to take that leap.

Travel takes you out of your box. You meet different people, see different lives...it can be incredibly eye-opening. Yet, I was dissapointed during the Q&A after the film. In some ways Brook seemed as confined by the "have-to" list as Joe Blow off the street. Many of the people interviewed by Brook while travelling seem to be more open to out of the box thinking.

Most interesting to me was his assertion that he feels the need to get this all done before marriage and kids because "you can't do it then" Uh...no..you can. It's different, its certainly not mainstream..but it can be done. My DH and I are contemplating saving up money and divesting ourselves of stuff so we can start travelling with our two boys in a couple of years. But then we're already out of the mainstream (homeschooling, unschooling, Compact) so that's just part of who we are.

Make no mistake....this is a great movie! If you did the backpack thing, it'll bring back good memories...if you're just thinking about doing it, its informative...and nothing else, hopefully it'll show people how to think out of the box a bit.

A Map for Saturday is the website. There are DVD's of the movie for sale there as well as some other information about the film.
